Cotswolds makeup artist Jessica Rose's top tips for cruelty-free summer skin...
1) A Liquid Peel
The one product I recommend to everyone is The Bodyshop’s liquid peel - a gentle exfoliating product that targets the everyday pollutants that sit on your skin. For an instant glow that lasts for days I recommend using this twice a week. It’s 100% vegan and comes in a variety of ranges - I use the Drops of Youth range which is infused with plant cells which encourage a 'bounce back' effect on the skin - perfect for anyone in their 30s and 40s. For your 50s onwards the Drops of Light range is fantastic. I recommend going into The Bodyshop and having a quick, free skincare analysis so the staff can advice which Liquid Peel is right for you.
2) Facial Tanner
If you like a bronzed glow in the summer then a facial tanner is a must. Superdrug’s Solait tanning range is fantastic. Use a foundation brush to buff the product into your skin to give you an even finish without staining your hands.
I can always tell by a client's face whether they are dehydrated - it exaggerates wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes.
Water helps regulate your body temperature so is a must for keeping cool as the days and nights get hotter. It flushes body waste and helps maintain blood pressure. You can also help the environment by choosing glass bottles instead of plastic ones.
This is a boring golden rule but makes the world of difference - drink plenty of water!
4) Hyaluronic Acid
Sounds scary but actually isn’t. It’s a moisture magnet and our bodies produce it naturally but levels dip as we get older, leading to wrinkles. I use The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid before using a moisturiser as it diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles when followed by a moisturiser the skin is instantly plumped and fresh. I like to use products from the same range and the best face cream I’ve found is, again, The Bodyshop’s Drops of Youth day cream as it encourages elasticity in the skin.
When choosing your foundation think about the type of coverage you want. For a sheer, barely there finish I use Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation. For a dewy coverage that is a little fuller and can be built up I love BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation. My favourite go-to budget foundation which leaves your skin looking flawless and provides a good coverage is Superdrug’s B.Flawless Silk Foundation. If you’re investing in foundation, getting a brush (or beauty blender) to apply it is a must - my favourite foundation brushes are by Real Techniques and are available at Boots or Superdrug. If you’ve been applying foundation with your fingers you’ll immediately see that a brush is a game-changer.
Finally - when it comes to foundation, less is more. Start with a sheer coverage and build up if you feel you want more coverage - the likelihood is, with a great skincare routine and hydrated skin - you won’t want to wear much at all!
About Jessica Rose
Jessica is an exclusively cruelty free hair and makeup artist, creating luxurious looks you can feel really good about.
'I am a mama of one - I have the coolest 4 year old boy called Eddie, I am a cervical cancer survivor, I speak Spanish, I love to travel and to be active. My favourite part of my job is meeting wonderful women and creating flawless soft glam hair and makeup looks.
Working with only cruelty free brands is something I feel passionately about. I’m happiest living a simple life - friends, family, fresh air and sunshine and I’m in my element. From as early as I can remember I have loved two things: makeup and making people feel good. Making someone look beautiful is easy, making someone feel beautiful can be slightly trickier.
What makes us feel gorgeous is individual to each of us and I love working with people to find out what makes them tick and what elements of makeup make them feel beautiful. I seek to enhance the natural beauty in every face I meet and to create a look that is flawless and still feels like you. None of my products or their ingredients have been tested on animals nor do they contain animal derivatives they are 100% cruelty free and vegan.'
