Wendy Murphy is a multipotentialite (I learnt this term from watching TED Talks) who lives in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.
What's one of those? 'Multipotentiality is an educational and psychological term referring to the ability and preference of a person, particularly one of strong intellectual or artistic curiosity, to excel in two or more different fields.'
The picture below shows Wendy singing in a band in 1980.
Wendy has lived and worked in the beautiful Forest of Dean for 20 years. She's a mother, friend, silversmith, tutor, artist, singer and generally sociable person. Her passion is for delivering high quality, statement jewellery pieces at an affordable price and with a high level of personal customer service to discerning people who value handcrafted jewellery.
I interviewed Wendy with 5 Quickfire Questions...
1. What's your best quality?
My best quality is probably enthusiasm which filters through into everything I do and rubs off on others so that they can achieve and enjoy the whole process of creating. Infectious enthusiasm is empowering, motivating and energising!
2. What do you do?
In one word it would probably be 'create'. I design and make sterling silver and gold jewellery but not only that; I facilitate others creating by teaching them my craft of silversmithing and thus am creating new artisan craftspeople. It's so mutually rewarding to see them grow in ability, creativity, skills and indeed confidence and pride in what they achieve. I'm also an artist and love to paint pet portraits. (Try saying 'paint pet portraits' after a G&T as fast as you can, it's trickier than 'red lorry yellow lorry'!)
3. If someone upsets you, how do you deal with it?
If it's business-related I usually move on and learn from the experience. In a personal context it can be quite hurtful and if I feel the cause of the upset is unwarranted I can feel angry. I've learned not to kick from the hip and to wait until anger subsides and then try to understand why that person might have upset me. Very often some understanding and acceptance can be much more healing that confrontation.
4. You live in the Forest of Dean... can you recommend the best place to eat and drink, for when our readers next visit your neck of the woods (pardon the pun)?
Without a doubt, visit The Railway Inn at Newnham which has won accolades for its cider. Upstairs there is a delicious Indian restaurant (no alcohol served but you can take it up from the pub) called Khan's. It's simple in decor but the food and service are impeccable... and very good value too!
5. Who is your closest confidante?
My sister Shirley (pictured) and also my close friend Marion.
Thank you, Wendy!
